Up

Ever since I watched the 1st shuttle launch in 1981 on television, I've always wanted to watch a launch in person.

Since this is the last year that the shuttle program will be in operation, it was now or never!  There are only 3 more launches scheduled for this year and then it's over :o(

I was able to get tickets to the visitor complex, which is about 6 miles from the launch pad.  The tickets for the viewing site 3 miles from the launch pad were sold out.  Even at 6 miles, the flames were very bright through my 400mm lens, the rumble was loud, you could feel it in your feet - in fact, it set off car alarms all around us!

Turns out the best spot for taking pictures was from the parking lot.  Plus, we also had a quick exit when it was over :o)

On a side note, you know when your traveling via airplane and you have checked luggage, you go down to the luggage carousel and wait and wait for you luggage to come.  Then, inevitably, your bags are always the last to come out.  Well low and behold, as we were standing there - plop - ours was the absolute very first bag to drop out!  That'll probably never ever happen again :o)

Quick Facts:
- it weighs around 12 million pounds at liftoff
- top speed is over 17,000 mph
